{"id":7443,"date":"2024-04-04T13:20:39","date_gmt":"2024-04-04T11:20:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.atola.com\/?p=7443"},"modified":"2025-10-09T08:26:07","modified_gmt":"2025-10-09T06:26:07","slug":"iscsi-insight-forensic","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/iscsi-insight-forensic\/","title":{"rendered":"Insight Forensic 5.5 \u2013 Image 3 iSCSI drives in parallel"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A new software update for Atola Insight Forensic is ready for download!<\/p>\n<p>Version 5.5 brings support for the iSCSI protocol and makes it possible to image drives that are soldered into a motherboard, working servers that couldn\u2019t be turned off, or devices for which you have legal warrant to access but not seize.<\/p>\n<h2>Use iSCSI for remote image acquisition<\/h2>\n<p>Before, the remote imaging option in Insight Forensic was only available for specific models of MacBooks Pro and Air released in 2016-2017 by using a Thunderbolt extension module.<\/p>\n<p>Now, thanks to iSCSI support in Insight Forensic, you can add up to 3 remote network drives simultaneously and image them in parallel.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/insight-5-5-iscsi-add-device.png\" alt=\"Adding an iSCSI device in Atola Insight Forensic 5.5\" width=\"2096\" height=\"1567\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7445\" \/><\/p>\n<p>This feature, available on <b>both DiskSense and DiskSense 2 hardware units<\/b>, could come in handy when you, for example, have to acquire data from an evidence drive that is soldered into a laptop or is connected to a PC or server that couldn\u2019t be turned off or seized.<\/p>\n<p>To add an iSCSI device for image acquisition in Insight Forensic, first you need to make it available on the host computer or server via iSCSI protocol. To learn how to properly set things up with iSCSI in Linux, check <a href=\"https:\/\/access.redhat.com\/documentation\/en-us\/red_hat_enterprise_linux\/6\/html\/storage_administration_guide\/ch-iscsi#iscsi-target-setup\">this article<\/a> on the Red Hat Customer Portal.<\/p>\n<h2>Control the state of an NVMe drive<\/h2>\n<p>Insight Forensic version 5.5 now includes a new status bar for NVMe drives. You can use this feature to monitor the different properties of your drive, such as temperature and power status, in real-time.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/insight-5-5-nvme-status-bar.png\" alt=\"The NVMe status bar in Atola Insight Forensic 5.5.\" width=\"2058\" height=\"1349\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7446\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Here\u2019s the meaning of each register:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Link:<\/strong> This indicator is enabled when device presence is detected, and a link with its NVMe controller is initialized.<\/p>\n<p><strong>RDY:<\/strong> Ready. This bit is enabled when the NVMe controller is ready to accept commands.<\/p>\n<p><strong>CFS:<\/strong> Controller Fatal Status. This bit is enabled if the controller has an error condition and is unable to communicate with software via completion queue entries.<\/p>\n<p><strong>APS:<\/strong> Active Power State. This field indicates the current power state of the controller, or the power state into which the controller is transitioning. APS 0 is the most power-consuming state activated when the drive is reading or writing blocks. All possible power states of the drive are listed in its diagnostics report.<\/p>\n<p><b>Temp:<\/b> Current drive temperature. It turns orange if it exceeds the drive\u2019s Warning temperature level and red if it exceeds the Critical temperature level.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/04\/insight-5-5-iscsi-power-states.png\" alt=\"A table with all possible power states of an NVMe drive in Atola Insight Forensic 5.5.\" width=\"2058\" height=\"1750\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-7449\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Also, now you can track two more parameters of an NVMe drive in its Diagnostic report:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>A <b>table with all possible power states<\/b> of a drive provides details about max power consumption and latency of switching between power states.<\/li>\n<li><b>Warning and Critical temperature<\/b> levels show when a drive starts overheating. These parameters are received from controller data.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Insight Forensic 5.5 Changelog<\/h2>\n<h3>New Features<\/h3>\n<p>System-wide support for <b>iSCSI drives<\/b>.<\/p>\n<p>CHAP discovery and login credentials are available for optional use.<\/p>\n<p><b>Imaging<\/b>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><b>iSCSI.<\/b> 3 parallel imaging sessions for both DiskSense 2 and DiskSense 1 units.<\/li>\n<li aria-level=\"1\"><span>Advanced statistics of read errors in the final report.
