This update brings some great new productivity features and more consistent performance.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p>The major changes in the 5.2 software update allow to:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>wipe multiple drives<\/li>\r\n<li>launch a third-party CLI app after image acquisition is over<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>Let&#8217;s delve into the new features to see how they can make you more efficient and productive at work.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Wipe multiple drives<\/h3>\r\n<p>One of the most popular use cases of Atola Insight Forensic is wiping multiple drives to prepare them for further digital forensic activities. Most of our customers prefer to wipe several drives connected to DiskSense unit simultaneously. To ease the launch of multiple wiping operations, there is a new menu item called <strong>Multi-launch<\/strong>. It includes two operations for now:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Fill or Erase<\/li>\r\n<li>SSD Trim<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>While SSD Trim enables to trim all of SSDs plugged into the DiskSense unit, Fill or Erase via Multi-launch helps run up to 7 forensic wiping processes in parallel.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Multi-launch-selection.png\" alt=\"Wiping multiple drives\" class=\"atola-shadow alignnone wp-image-6547 size-full\" width=\"859\" height=\"780\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>In Multi-launch mode, Atola Insight suggests a variety of wiping methods:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>Zero-fill<\/li>\r\n<li>Custom pattern<\/li>\r\n<li>LBA number in each sector<\/li>\r\n<li>Secure Erase<\/li>\r\n<li>DoD 5220.22-M<\/li>\r\n<li>NIST 800-88<\/li>\r\n<li>Random<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>For SSD drives, it is highly recommended to use Secure Erase in Enhanced mode.\u00a0 It acts as a simple generation of the internal crypto key because the SSD NAND memory is encrypted by default. It makes data unrecoverable from all memory blocks, including the over-provisioning zone.<\/p>\r\n<p>Look how quick the launch of wiping for 7 drives via Multi-launch is:<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/multi-short2.gif\" alt=\"Erase many drives\" class=\"atola-shadow alignnone wp-image-6548 size-full\" width=\"1425\" height=\"976\" \/><\/p>\r\n<h3>Launch a CLI app after image acquisition is over<\/h3>\r\n<p>More imaging automation comes with the new feature to help you become more efficient.<\/p>\r\n<p>You can find it as <strong>After imaging<\/strong> option.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Launch-CLI.png\" alt=\"Launch CLI app after imaging\" class=\"atola-shadow alignnone wp-image-6551 size-full\" width=\"1284\" height=\"952\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>Using it, one can launch any CLI app or even BAT-file containing the chain of CLI apps immediately after imaging is completed.<\/p>\r\n<p>Insight 5.2 assists in specifying default arguments of Autopsy, X-Ways, Forensic Explorer and OSFMount.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/CLI-patterns.png\" alt=\"CLI app arguments\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6552\" width=\"1126\" height=\"450\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>In such a case, the typical workflow will be:<\/p>\r\n<ol>\r\n<li>Enable the option<\/li>\r\n<li>Specify CLI app and its arguments, where %1 is a full path to target image file that will be created during<\/li>\r\n<li>Start imaging<\/li>\r\n<li>Leave it working (creating image of modern 10+ TB drives can take 10-15 hours)<\/li>\r\n<li>After imaging completion, Atola Insight removes the target image file from the top port panel, closing the file handle<\/li>\r\n<li>Then Atola Insight launches the specified CLI app against it<\/li>\r\n<li>Not only is the source evidence imaged, but also it is processed with your favorite forensic analysis app!<\/li>\r\n<\/ol>\r\n<h5>Example. Atola Insight Forensic with KAPE against created E01 image<\/h5>\r\n<p>KAPE is a wonderful free triage tool developed by Eric Zimmerman. Digital forensic experts love it for high performance and effectiveness in collecting evidence files.<\/p>\r\n<p>The tool works with folders and files and cannot parse partitions in E01 image file. The workaround is creating BAT file with three instructions:<\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li>mount a partition from E01 file with OSFMount<\/li>\r\n<li>run KAPE<\/li>\r\n<li>unmount the partition with OSFMount<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p>We collect all browser user data using KAPE in this example.<\/p>\r\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/Kape-Script.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"atola-shadow alignnone wp-image-6554 size-full\" width=\"1140\" height=\"571\" \/><\/p>\r\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\r\n<p>After imaging is over, Atola Insight executed the BAT file, which resulted in the following text file.
