And more additions are underway!<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Supported as of April 2022:<\/b> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RAID types<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> RAID 0, 1, 5, 10 &amp; JBOD<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">File systems: NTFS, ext4\/3\/2, XFS, exFAT, HFS\/HFS+<\/span> \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3><strong>The scope of the <a href=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/products\/taskforce\/forensic-raid-image.html\">RAID module<\/a> today<\/strong><\/h3>\r\n<p><b>Configuration autodetection:\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fast and effective RAID configuration autodetection of unknown RAIDs\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nstant configuration autodetection of mdadm-created arrays<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RAID partition preview for fast confirmation of a successful reassembly<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><b>Imaging:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical imaging of a whole RAID\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Imaging of selected partitions<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Logical acquisition of selected files and folders<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><b>RAID data rebuilding and recovery:<\/b><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For RAIDs with redundancy: automatic rebuilding of RAID data when a drive is missing, or one\/multiple are damaged\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For all RAID types: automatic data recovery imaging algorithms applied to damaged members to obtain as complete image of the RAID data as possible<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now, let\u2019s look into the different cases in more detail.<\/span> \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3><b>RAID Autodetection<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A simple selection of all RAID members (be it devices, images or a combination) instantly launches Autodetection that consists of two stages.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Stage 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: TaskForce reads data from the initial 3M sectors of the members to identify the RAID type and narrow down the number of combinations for the next stage;<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Stage 2<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: TaskForce runs through thousands (in some cases, millions) of possible configurations searching for the suitable ones.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The maximum combination count per Autodetection is set to 100,000,000. And if you think it is too many, then here is an example. With 12 possible block (stripe) sizes ranging from 512 bytes to 1 MB, TaskForce is able to check all possible RAID configurations for:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">9 devices in RAID 5 array (17,418,240 variants)<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10 devices in RAID 0 array (43,545,600 variants)<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you know the configuration, you are free to enter it manually.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Autodetection module produces an output of configurations that are deemed suitable after a verification of the RAID\u2019s file system. To apply the suggested configuration, simply click the Apply button.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large atola-shadow\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/1autodetection.jpg\" alt=\"RAID autodetection\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-6523 size-full\" width=\"512\" height=\"372\" \/>\r\n<figcaption>Click Apply to use the detected configuration<\/figcaption>\r\n<\/figure>\r\n\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At this point, the members are instantly arranged into the correct order, RAID type and other configurations are applied automatically, file systems are mounted and you get a preview of the file structure in the Partition preview.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In case no suitable configuration has been identified, we have introduced an additional <\/span><b>Stage 3 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Autodetection process. It uses an alternative heuristic approach during the configuration search and indicates the percentage of valid files resulting from each possible configuration it has detected.<\/span> \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3><b>RAID partition preview<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every change in RAID configuration prompts the bottom Partitions panel to refresh. If the configuration is correct, file systems are found and validated, so that you see partitions and their contents.<\/span> <\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large atola-shadow\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/08\/5useful-partition.png\" alt=\"RAID configuration\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-4716 size-full\" width=\"2736\" height=\"1824\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<p> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a RAID array is reassembled, you can proceed to either imaging or logical imaging.\u00a0<\/span> \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Linux mdadm: instant RAID recognition<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atola TaskForce instantly identifies and mounts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/products\/taskforce\/manual\/mdadm-raid.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mdadm-created RAID<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> arrays and their configuration by detecting controller metadata. With TaskForce, this process takes no more than two seconds and requires no manual application.<\/span> <\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large atola-shadow\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/mdadm-raid5-detected.jpg\" alt=\"RAID configuration\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5431 size-full\" width=\"2736\" height=\"1824\" \/> \u00a0<\/figure>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Imaging a reassembled <\/b><b>RAID<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><b>full image acquisition<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, simply select your target, and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">start the session. All imaging settings can be applied to such acquisitions.<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TaskForce will image data at a speed sustained by the selected target. Targets are usually the bottleneck when imaging RAIDs whose data transfer rate is higher than that of a single drive.\u00a0<\/span> <\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large atola-shadow\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/TF1.jpg\" alt=\"Imaging process\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5409 size-full\" width=\"1920\" height=\"1080\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<p> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon the completion of imaging, TaskForce provides you with an <\/span><b>imaging report <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that lists all RAID details including all members, RAID configuration, selected data range (the whole RAID or its elements, etc.).<\/span> \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Logical imaging of a RAID<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To save time and quickly acquire the most critical data from a RAID, use logical imaging. By default, logical imaging is set to image all files from the drive.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To fine-tune your selection, include what you need:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All or selected partitions<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Manually selected files and\/or folders\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Select files types: archives, emails, documents, databases, financial, virtual machine, audio, video, pictures, security keys.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Folder types: only user or only OS folders<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Time spans: when files were accessed, created, modified<\/span><\/li>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">File size: from 1 byte to infinity<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exclude what is irrelevant:<\/span><\/p>\r\n<ul>\r\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exclude filters allow using the same parameters to eliminate irrelevant files and folders for further precision of your search.<\/span><\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large atola-shadow\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/04\/logical_tf.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-6524\" width=\"2736\" height=\"1824\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<p><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Imaging selected partitions\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atola TaskForce lets you image individual partitions of a RAID.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After RAID configuration is applied, the file system is confirmed and you can see the detected partitions. Preview their contents and decide which of the partitions is of interest.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Click the Go to Image button, select the target you want to use, go to the Settings and select Imaging only sectors with data. Unselect the partitions you want to exclude from imaging, Save this change and click Start.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"711\" height=\"400\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/JV5_61b3VnI\" title=\"YouTube video player\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><span data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" class=\"mce_SELRES_end\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe> \u00a0<\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Imaging RAIDs with redundancy that contain a missing device<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TaskForce uses the redundancy of RAIDs (such as RAID 1, 5 or 10) to create a full image of the RAID even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/products\/taskforce\/manual\/raid-images-missing.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">if a member is missing or is heavily damaged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To do that, select all the available RAID members and click Add missing device button underneath the list of RAID members. This will make TaskForce take into consideration the possibility of such unknown device being a part of this RAID when searching for a suitable configuration.<\/span> <\/p>\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large atola-shadow\"><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/raid-missing-drives.jpg\" alt=\"RAID configuration\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-5552 size-full\" width=\"2736\" height=\"1824\" \/><\/figure>\r\n<p> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the imaging report, you will see which of the devices of the given RAID array was missing.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other RAID parameters, such as type, block size and order, will be also clearly reflected in the report.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<h3><b>Imaging RAIDs with redundancy containing damaged drives\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\r\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Atola TaskForce can detect the parameters of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/products\/taskforce\/manual\/imaging-raid5-2damaged-drives.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">RAID 5 array with two damaged drives <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and successfully image such RAIDs regardless of errors.\u00a0<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the RAID members are selected and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Continue<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> button is pressed, TaskForce autodetection module starts running immediately.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Stage 1<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: When TaskForce reads data on the drives to identify RAID type and runs across an error, the system displays error tags next to the respective RAID member.<\/span><\/p>\r\n<p><b>Stage 2: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">TaskForce identifies a suitable RAID configuration.
