{"id":1634,"date":"2017-05-04T01:00:05","date_gmt":"2017-05-03T23:00:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/?p=1634"},"modified":"2026-05-06T07:33:24","modified_gmt":"2026-05-06T05:33:24","slug":"lifting-hpa-and-dco-restrictions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/lifting-hpa-and-dco-restrictions\/","title":{"rendered":"Lifting HPA and DCO restrictions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Both HPA (host protected area) and DCO (device configuration overlay) features were created by hard drive manufacturers as hidden areas reserved for storing vendor utilities or simply to make a drive appear to have a certain number of sectors (smaller than the actual drive capacity). But it is many years ago that end users learned to modify and write to these areas of hard drives with the help\u00a0of open source and freely available tools. For digital forensics specialists, it means that without the ability to identify such hidden areas of a drive and image the full physical image including data in these areas, the evidence they get may be incomplete and lead to inaccurate investigative conclusions.<\/p>\n<p>When you connect a hard drive to the<em> DiskSense<\/em> unit, in addition\u00a0to the standard <em>Identify device<\/em> command, Atola Insight Forensic automatically sends two commands to look up the drive size as set in drive\u2019s firmware:\u00a0<em>Read native max address<\/em>\u00a0and <em>Device configuration identify<\/em>. If drive size has been limited by DCO or HPA,\u00a0<em>Insight<\/em> will draw attention to these changes by adding corresponding red indicators to the <em>DiskSense Source Port<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1635\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/1-HPADCO-Home.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"948\" height=\"713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/1-HPADCO-Home.png 948w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/1-HPADCO-Home-150x113.png 150w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/1-HPADCO-Home-300x226.png 300w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/1-HPADCO-Home-768x578.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 948px) 100vw, 948px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To get more details about the modifications that have been made to the drive\u2019s firmware, run<em> Automatic Checkup<\/em> and see the <em>Firmware<\/em> section of the <em>Diagnostics report.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>There you will see three lines indicating the drive\u2019s Max Address according to different records in the drive\u2019s firmware:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>The <em>Max Address according to device ID<\/em> line\u00a0shows the max address from the ID sector, affected by both HPA and DCO restrictions if those are applied.<\/li>\n<li><em>Native Max Address<\/em>\u00a0indicates max address ignoring HPA limitation that may have been enabled, yet affected by DCO restriction.<\/li>\n<li><em>Max Address from DCO<\/em> is the line that gives you the actual drive size.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>A <em>Diagnostics report<\/em> of a drive that does not have HPA or DCO activated will have the same value in all three lines.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1636\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/2-HPADCO-Diagnostics.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1014\" height=\"844\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/2-HPADCO-Diagnostics.png 1014w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/2-HPADCO-Diagnostics-150x125.png 150w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/2-HPADCO-Diagnostics-300x250.png 300w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/2-HPADCO-Diagnostics-768x639.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1014px) 100vw, 1014px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>To disable any limitations that have been applied to the drive\u2019s firmware, click on the <em>Unclip HPA\/DCO<\/em> subcategory under <em>Device Utilities<\/em> category of the left-side menu and click on <em>Unclip<\/em> button.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that\u00a0<em>Write Protection<\/em>\u00a0switch needs to be disabled on the DiskSense unit to perform this operation, as <em>Unclip HPA\/DCO<\/em> implies making changes to the drive&#8217;s firmware, and <em>Write Protection<\/em> won&#8217;t let perform such changes.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1639\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/3-HPADCO-Unclip-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"849\" height=\"713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/3-HPADCO-Unclip-1.png 849w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/3-HPADCO-Unclip-1-150x126.png 150w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/3-HPADCO-Unclip-1-300x252.png 300w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/3-HPADCO-Unclip-1-768x645.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 849px) 100vw, 849px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><em>Atola Insight Forensic<\/em> lifts HPA and DCO restrictions in a matter of seconds\u00a0and enables access to all data on the drive.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1638\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-HPADCO-Result.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"849\" height=\"713\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-HPADCO-Result.png 849w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-HPADCO-Result-150x126.png 150w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-HPADCO-Result-300x252.png 300w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/4-HPADCO-Result-768x645.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 849px) 100vw, 849px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Lift HPA until power cycle<\/h3>\n<p>Often, due to internal procedures, forensic specialists are not allowed to make any changes to the drive, therefore they cannot disable HPA and DCO restrictions and access data in the hidden areas. But with <em>Atola Insight Forensic<\/em> it is possible to lift HPA limitation until the next power cycle, which helps avoid permanent changes to the drive.<\/p>\n<p>To use this feature, go to <em>Host Protected Area<\/em> subcategory of the <em>Device Utilities<\/em> category of the menu and click <em>Read HPA parameters<\/em> link. By clicking <em>Set as current<\/em> link you will\u00a0automatically change <em>Current Max Address<\/em> value to that of <em>Native Max Address.
