This guide will explain how to retrieve data with the minimal risk of data loss on a drive with a damaged head stack.<\/p>\n<p>If an<em><strong> Automatic Checkup report<\/strong><\/em> indicates that there is a problem with the heads, look at the status of each head.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/1-Diagnostics-Report.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>If the status of a head or multiple heads is <em><strong>Degraded<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>Damaged<\/strong><\/em>, the drive will not be able to read all the data. What\u2019s worse, even more sectors may soon become unavailable due to incorrect functioning of the drive\u2019s hardware.<\/p>\n<p>We recommend that you start by imaging the heads, whose status is <em><strong id=\"step3\">OK<\/strong><\/em>, as soon as possible. To do that:<\/p>\n<p>Step 1. Go to <em>Imaging <\/em>category of the left-side menu, click on<em> Create New Session <\/em>link and select the device or file to which the data will be imaged.<br \/>\nStep 2. In the <em>Start new imaging session<\/em> page go to <em><strong>Heads<\/strong><\/em> line and click on <em><strong>Select heads to use<\/strong><\/em> link.<br \/>\nStep 3. Unselect the damaged head.<br \/>\nStep 4. Click on <em>Start Imaging <\/em>button.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/2-1-Unselect-Degraded-Head.png\" alt=\"2-1 Unselect Degraded Head\" width=\"910\" height=\"572\" \/><\/p>\n<p>As a result, you get as much data from the drive\u2019s viable heads as possible before even beginning to work with the damaged head. This way the risk of losing data on the working part of the head stack is minimized.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/3-1-Imaging-Result-with-3-Good-Heads.png\" alt=\"3-1 Imaging Result with 3 Good Heads\" width=\"953\" height=\"651\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now that this data has been successfully retrieved, you have two options:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>To have the head stack replaced before imaging the remaining data. However, as a result of head stack replacement\u00a0data on the drive can become unreadable.<\/li>\n<li>To attempt Imaging data with the <em><strong>Degraded<\/strong><\/em> or <em><strong>Damaged<\/strong><\/em> head. Follow the same procedure as with the good heads, only this time, during <em><a href=\"#step3\">Step 3<\/a><\/em> unselect all the working heads and leave only the <em><strong>Degraded\/Damaged<\/strong><\/em> one(s) before clicking on <em>Start Imaging<\/em>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/4-1-Unselect-3-Working-Heads.png\" alt=\"4-1 Unselect 3 Working Heads\" width=\"807\" height=\"558\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Atola Insight Forensic\u2019s sophisticated functionality enables users to retrieve maximum data even from the severely damaged drives.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/5-Imaging-Degraded-Head.png\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Now that you have an image of the source evidence including the data copied from the damaged head, you can take the risk and get\u00a0the head stack fixed.
