Try it out at <a href=\"https:\/\/multidrive.io\">multidrive.io<\/a><\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>If you need to extract or reset an unknown password or perform drive recovery on a Seagate hard drive, use a <strong>Serial cable<\/strong> to connect the drive to the DiskSense unit.<\/p>\n<p>Take a minute to familiarize yourself with the Serial cable\u2019s three connectors. On one side of the cable, there are two connectors. Both are <strong>2-pin RX-TX<\/strong> (receive-transmit) connectors. The slightly larger one has<strong> 2.5-mm<\/strong>\u00a0pin pitch and is used for <strong>IDE<\/strong> drives. The smaller one has<strong> 2-mm<\/strong> pin pitch and is used for <strong>SATA<\/strong> drives.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Serial-Cable-Connectors-Close-Up.jpg\" alt=\"Serial Cable Connectors Close Up\" width=\"625\" height=\"366\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-7791\" \/><\/p>\n<p>On the opposite side of the Serial cable, there is a <strong>3-pin TX-RX-GND<\/strong> (transmit-receive-grounding) connector. This connector is\u00a0inserted in the <strong>Serial port<\/strong> on the back side of the DiskSense unit.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/DiskSense-Back-Side-circle.jpg\" alt=\"DiskSense Back Side\" width=\"700\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Connecting 3.5-inch and 2.5-inch Seagate SATA drives<\/h3>\n<p>When you look at a Seagate SATA drive (either 3.5-inch or 2.5-inch), there is a<strong> 4-pin jumper block<\/strong> right next to the SATA port.<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/seagate-sata-3.5-circle.jpg\" alt=\"Seagate sata 3.5 \" width=\"556\" height=\"206\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7787 \" \/><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/seagate-sata-2.5-circle.jpg\" alt=\"seagate sata 2.5 \" width=\"519\" height=\"229\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7785\" \/><br \/>\nConnect the <b>2-mm RX-TX<\/b>\u00a0end of the serial cable to the two jumper pins located closest to the SATA port so that the red <strong>RX<\/strong> (receive) wire is connected to the pin closer to the SATA port.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/seagate-sata-serial-arrow.jpg\" alt=\"Connect the 2-mm RX-TX\u00a0end of the serial cable\" width=\"493\" height=\"298\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7788\" \/><br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/seagate-sata-2.5-serial-arrow.jpg\" alt=\"Connect the 2-mm RX-TX\u00a0end of the serial cable\" width=\"507\" height=\"381\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7786\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Connecting 3.5-inch Seagate IDE drives<\/h3>\n<p>Desktop IDE drives have an <strong>8-pin jumper block<\/strong> between IDE\u00a0port and Power port. For the purpose of this manual, we shall call the pair of pins located closest to the IDE port and used for Master\/Slave settings the <strong>first pair<\/strong> of pins. The next, second pair of pins is usually used for Cable Select settings. The <strong>third pair<\/strong> of pins is the one we will connect the <strong>Serial cable<\/strong> to.<\/p>\n<p>Please note that IDE hard drives must be set to <strong>Master mode<\/strong> for password extraction and reset or drive recovery. To use the drive in Master mode, place a jumper on the first pair of pins (closest to the IDE port), as shown in the picture below.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/seagate-IDE-3.5-arrow.jpg\" alt=\"seagate IDE 3.5\" width=\"527\" height=\"227\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7783\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Attach the<strong> 2.5-mm RX-TX<\/strong> connector to the<strong> third pair<\/strong> of jumper pins, as shown in the picture below. Make sure that red <strong>RX<\/strong> (receive) wire is facing down and the black <strong>TX<\/strong> (transmit) wire is facing up. The<strong> second pair <\/strong>and the\u00a0<strong>fourth pair <\/strong>of pins must be left open.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/seagate-IDE-3.5-connected-aroow.jpg\" alt=\"seagate IDE 3.5 connected\" width=\"499\" height=\"336\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7784\" \/><\/p>\n<h3>Connecting 2.5-inch Seagate IDE drives<\/h3>\n<p>Similar to desktop hard drives, laptop Seagate hard drives also must be set to Master mode to perform password extraction and reset or drive recovery. Master mode on a 2.5-inch device is set by removing all\u00a0jumpers.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1337\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sagate-IDE-2.5.jpg\" alt=\"Seagate IDE 2.5\" width=\"700\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sagate-IDE-2.5.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sagate-IDE-2.5-150x66.jpg 150w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sagate-IDE-2.5-300x132.jpg 300w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sagate-IDE-2.5-768x338.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/sagate-IDE-2.5-1024x450.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" \/><br \/>\nThere is a <strong>3.5&#8243;-to-2.5&#8243; IDE adapter<\/strong> included in the package with the DiskSense unit. It consists of the following components:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>IDE port <strong>J1<\/strong> for IDE interface cable<\/li>\n<li>2.5-inch IDE port <strong>J2<\/strong> to connect the drive to<\/li>\n<li>Power port <strong>J3<\/strong> for IDE power cable<\/li>\n<li>4-pin block <strong>J4<\/strong>, where each pin is marked with letter <strong>A<\/strong>, <strong>B<\/strong>, <strong>C<\/strong>, and <strong>D<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-1421\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IDE-adapter-273x300.jpg\" alt=\"2.5-to-3.5 IDE adapter\" width=\"273\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IDE-adapter-273x300.jpg 273w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IDE-adapter-137x150.jpg 137w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IDE-adapter-768x844.jpg 768w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/IDE-adapter.jpg 842w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 273px) 100vw, 273px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Use the adapter to connect the drive to IDE interface cable and IDE power cable. Then attach the<strong> 2.5-mm RX-TX<\/strong> connector to pins marked <strong>A<\/strong> and <strong>C<\/strong>, as shown in the picture below. Make sure that the black <strong>TX<\/strong> (transmit) wire is connected to the pin <strong>A<\/strong>, and red <strong>RX<\/strong> (receive) wire is connected to the pin <strong>C<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Seagate-IDE-2.5-connected-arrow.jpg\" alt=\"Seagate-IDE-2.5-connected-\" width=\"481\" height=\"501\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7790\" \/><\/p>\n<p><i>Please note that to use the 2.5-inch Seagate IDE drive in<strong> Slave mode<\/strong>, the<strong>\u00a02.5-mm RX-TX<\/strong> connector must be detached from the adapter and instead a jumper must be placed on pins <strong>A<\/strong> and <strong>B<\/strong>.<\/i><\/p>\n<h3>Configuring the Baud rate<\/h3>\n<p>Once the Seagate hard drive is connected to the unit, follow these instructions to configure the <strong>Baud rate<\/strong> of Seagate Terminal, which allows you to use an extensive set of commands on a Seagate drive:<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>If there is only one source drive connected to the DiskSense unit, it will automatically be identified and displayed in the <strong>Source disk port<\/strong>. However, if there are multiple hard drives connected to the DiskSense unit as Source drives, go to <strong>Source<\/strong> category of the top level menu, click on <strong>Select Source<\/strong>\u00a0and choose the Seagate drive.<\/li>\n<li>Power down the selected drive.<\/li>\n<li>In the <strong>Windows<\/strong> category of the top level menu click on <strong>Terminal<\/strong> and in the<strong> COM Port Settings<\/strong> window select the <strong>Baud rate<\/strong>\u00a0compatible with the drive. <em>Please note that for Seagate 7200.10 and older Baud rate will be 9600; for 7200.11 and newer Baud rate will be 38400 (Atola Insight Forensic will suggest the baud rate by setting a default value in the Terminal window for the drive connected to it)<\/em>.<\/li>\n<li>Then click OK. But do not close the <strong>Terminal<\/strong> window just yet.<\/li>\n<li>Power on the drive again. There must be a valid output in the <strong>Terminal<\/strong> window (see the picture below).<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-1339\" src=\"http:\/\/blog.atola.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Terminal-printscreen.png\" alt=\"Terminal output\" width=\"658\" height=\"463\" srcset=\"https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Terminal-printscreen.png 658w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Terminal-printscreen-150x106.png 150w, https:\/\/atola.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/01\/Terminal-printscreen-300x211.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Should there be no output in the Terminal window or should it consist of random symbols, try to change the Baud rate until you get a good response.<\/p>\n<p>Now proceed with password extraction or send Seagate Terminal commands to the drive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>[Update 2025] Atola Technology keeps developing Atola Insight Forensic, forensic data recovery tool capable of Seagate password removal via COM port.
